About

Bio

Eric Cato’s abstract and narrative photographic images are found in the streets of cities over the last two decades. In terms of printed images, Cato strives for wall presence, using a 4×5 format camera when possible to capture objects in great detail, enabling him to make archival prints as large as two meters high or wide.

Born in Manhattan to creative parents, Cato cannot remember a time when he and his siblings were not surrounded by art. He attended liberal-arts high schools and then NYU School of Film & Television and the School of Visual Arts (Parsons), among others. “While I have had some formal photographic training, my father—a painter, photographer, graphic designer, art director, and teacher— was my primary creative guide; he, books, and of course New York’s great museums.”

While he worked in New York and Los Angeles as a commercial photographer, primarily in celebrity portraiture, publicity, and fashion, he has concentrated exclusively on his personal work since 2002.  Cato is a committed environmentalist and human rights activist and an American citizen living and working in Medellín, Colombia.

Photographic Limited Editions

In the art world, fine-art photographic prints are categorized as a work-on-paper, the same category as engraving, etching, linocut, and lithographs, etc. For hundreds of years, works-on-paper artwork have been produced in limited, numbered editions of specific number: seven, ten, twelve, twenty identical prints of the specific image from the source file.

The edition prints shown and described on this website are for sale; each print is one of a limited, numbered & signed archival media edition; each print has its unique specific number within the edition, ie #7 of 12. Under each image, the information relevant to the edition(s) of the specific image: its title and year; its dimensions; the number of prints in the edition. And in the instance that a print, or prints from the specific edition have been purchased, what numbers in the edition is are still available. Also the media and equipment used to capture the image—type of film or high resolution digital image; if a photograph has been made with a 4×5″ film camera or a high resolution digital camera, it is stated in the image’s description.

A Certification of Authenticity (COA) that includes all relevant data about the print its edition number and technical production related data is e-mailed when a print is purchased; the artist’s signed COA is sent separately.

Once the final print in an edition is made, the edition is closed and no further prints will be made. Ownership of the original negative or digital source file is retained in the artist’s archive; as are the rights to exhibit or publish the image in editorial, industry, or scholarly journals or websites.

The prices listed on the website are for a single unframed edition print; all edition prints are made using the digital giclée printing process on archival exhibition quality paper using pigment-based archival inks rated to retain their color for 120+ years when framed and displayed in accordance with widely-accepted conditions understood to be normal usage, lighting and humidity conditions.

Purchases can be made by international wire transfer in US dollars or Euros; or by Paypal in US dollars (+ a 3.49% surcharge.)

Shipping

Packing for shipment is done in compliance with accepted industry standards to protect the image during shipping. A print is carefully placed on sturdy clean acid-free packing paper that is several inches larger than the print itself on all sides (to protect the print’s edges) and then carefully rolled inside the packing paper and then placed inside a sturdy 8” diameter cardboard or PVC tube (prints under 20” on either side are shipped in 6” tubes).

The industry standard is that shipping costs are paid by the client, and  packaging costs by the artist. Videos of the standard procedures for the preparing an unframed fine art photographic print for shipment in a tube can be found on Youtube.
